The Beginning
The botanical park traces its origins back to 1990, when two Albertans wanted to share their passion for gardening with the local community. Former mayor Richard Plain and retired city landscape planner John Beadle envisioned creating a botanical park in a region with a high plant hardiness rating. Their goal was to cultivate a variety of plants and make them accessible to the public, inspiring pride and appreciation among visitors.
With the support of local authorities, the dream came to life. The St. Albert Botanic Park Society was officially registered in 1990 as a non-commercial charitable organization. After its establishment, the city actively monitored the park’s growth and management. The botanical garden was developed on leased municipal land, and the foundation was laid in the fall of 1992.
John and Beadle collaborated with local landscape architects to design the first plan for the park. Their project featured a range of thematic gardens, including shaded plants, flowering trees, evergreens, and perennial cottage-style flowers.
The Heritage Garden
In 2015, the Heritage Garden was conceptualized to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the park’s establishment. Since the park is situated on historically rich land, the idea was to plant flora once cultivated by early settlers.
On early homesteads, many trees were planted as windbreaks and to provide shade for other plants from the scorching sun. The first plants in the Heritage Garden were introduced in 2016. By 2018, historical farm artifacts, such as a water pump, metal bucket, and funnel, were installed. A plow was added as the centerpiece of the area, offering visitors a glimpse into the past alongside the beauty of the plants.
The founders take pride in having created a “wonder garden” where visitors can enjoy fresh air and stunning surroundings.
The Modern Botanical Park
Today, the botanical park features roses, lilacs, daylilies, peonies, vegetables, and a variety of annual plants. Additionally, it boasts nearly 40 different species of shrubs, trees, and vines. The founders revealed in an interview that each plant and tree has specific cultivation requirements, necessitating significant time and effort from volunteers and staff.
The park is managed and maintained by volunteers and two seasonal workers. Its success is attributed to the dedication and hard work invested over the years. Membership in the park society is open to the public, encouraging broader community participation in its development.
Despite its long history, the park has stayed true to its original vision. Founders Richard and John remain active as board members and volunteers, making the unique botanical park a jewel of Alberta.
Events and Popularity
Each year, the park hosts events such as rose sales and serves as a venue for weddings, public gatherings, and community celebrations. It continues to gain popularity as a gathering place. Visitors are welcome year-round, any day of the week.
