Funny birthday wishes for a girl — by age, from Mom and Dad, from grandparents, short lines for the card

A birthday message for a kid has one job the adult version never has: it must survive being read out loud in a kitchen full of people, at least one of whom is holding a cake. Health, success and prosperity mean nothing to a seven-year-old. She waits politely through those words the way she waits through a long speech, hoping the candles come next. What actually lands is small and specific: a later bedtime, pancakes for supper, one whole day when nobody mentions the state of her room. That is also why the wishes below are sorted by age before anything else. Five and eleven are not the same audience, and a line that works beautifully on a kindergartener gets a flat stare from somebody in grade six. After the age sections there are wishes from Mom and Dad, wishes from grandparents, short ones that fit inside a card, and a handful written to be performed out loud. Every one of them is finished. Copy it, sign it, done.

Funny birthday wishes for a girl turning three, four or five

1

Happy birthday! Today the rules belong to you. If you declare that cake is a breakfast food, then that is officially what it is and nobody is allowed to argue.

2

You are one whole year bigger than at your last birthday, which means you can now reach one whole shelf higher. Please use this power carefully.

3

Wishing you a birthday with loud music, crumbs all over the floor, and grown-ups who politely pretend not to notice either one.

4

Happy birthday! May every candle go out on the first try, and may the one that does not be somebody else’s fault entirely.

5

Today you get the biggest piece. That is not a wish, that is a fact, and we have already cleared it with the cake.

6

Wishing you a whole day of jumping on things that are not for jumping on. Just today. Tomorrow the couch goes back to being furniture.

7

Happy birthday to a person whose favourite colour has changed three times this week. We made a wish for all three, just to be safe.

8

May your birthday be full of bubbles, puddles and a bath that happens much, much later than usual.

9

Happy birthday! We hope you get a present you love, and a box it came in that you love even more.

Funny wishes for a girl of six to nine

1

Happy birthday! Wishing you a whole year of recess that never ends early and one glorious Friday with no homework in it at all.

2

You are now old enough to explain things to grown-ups. We apologize in advance for how often we are going to need this.

3

Wishing you a birthday with cake for lunch, cake for dessert, and one slice hidden somewhere only you know about.

4

Happy birthday! May your favourite hoodie survive the entire year, and may nobody put it in the wash on a day you need it.

5

Another year, another pair of boots you will grow out of by spring. Wear them fast. Happy birthday!

6

Wishing you a year where every group project has good people in it and the marker never runs out halfway through your title.

7

Happy birthday! May you learn one fact so strange that the whole family has to look it up at supper.

8

Today you are the boss of the music, the boss of the snacks and the boss of the remote. Tomorrow, sadly, the boss is Mom again.

9

Wishing you a birthday with zero vegetables on the plate and a very good explanation ready in case somebody asks about it.

Funny birthday wishes for a girl of ten to twelve

1

Happy birthday! You have reached the age where adults say you are growing up so fast at least four times per party. Nod politely. The cake is worth it.

2

Wishing you a year of getting your own way in small, reasonable amounts, and parents who give in slightly faster than they did last year.

3

Happy birthday to the person who is right about the password, right about the show and right about the snack order. It must be exhausting being you.

4

May your headphones stay charged, your room stay yours, and the door stay knocked on. Happy birthday.

5

Wishing you a birthday with no early alarm, no drama in the group chat, and one message that makes you laugh at exactly the wrong moment.

6

Happy birthday! This year your opinion counts on where we go for supper. Use it well. We are watching closely.

7

You are old enough now to be trusted with the good speaker. Happy birthday, and please, nothing loud before nine in the morning.

8

Wishing you a year where you are allowed to stay up for the end of the movie, including the long ones with a scene after the credits.

9

Happy birthday! May your favourite thing this year still be your favourite thing next year. We would like to buy you a present that lasts.

From Mom and Dad, in our own words

1

Happy birthday from both of us. We would like it noted for the record that we agreed on the present this year without one argument in the parking lot.

2

One year older, and we are one year better at this. Not good, exactly. Better. Happy birthday, kiddo.

3

Happy birthday! We hoped for a quiet, tidy, sensible child and we got you instead. Best thing that ever went wrong for us.

4

Today we will say yes to nearly everything. Choose wisely, because tomorrow the word no comes back from vacation.

5

Happy birthday from Mom and Dad. Thank you for being the reason we now know every single word of that one song. Every word.

6

We have watched you learn a dozen things we can no longer help you with. Happy birthday, and please be patient with us while we catch up.

7

Happy birthday! We promise not to tell the story about the frosting again. Out loud. In front of your friends. Probably.

8

Wishing you a year full of your own ideas, most of which we will hear about afterwards. Happy birthday, and please keep your phone charged.

9

Happy birthday to our favourite person to make breakfast for. We are keeping count of the pancakes, but we are saying nothing.

From Grandma and Grandpa

1

Happy birthday from Grandma and Grandpa. The rules at our house have not changed: dessert comes first, bedtime is a suggestion, and what happens here stays here.

2

We have been grandparents for exactly as long as you have been alive, so we are still learning too. Happy birthday, and thank you for your patience with us.

3

Happy birthday! We would send you money, but you would only spend it on something sensible. Buy something completely ridiculous. That is an order.

4

Wishing you a year of long afternoons, warm cookies, and a grandmother who will absolutely let you have a second one.

5

Happy birthday! Your parents have rules. We have snacks. This arrangement has worked for years and we see no reason to change it now.

6

We remember the year you would not go anywhere without that one toy. We remember everything, and we bring it up at every birthday. Happy birthday!

7

Happy birthday from the two people who find everything you do remarkable, including several things that are honestly quite ordinary.

8

Wishing you a birthday with a phone call that goes on far too long. Ours, obviously. We are not going to let you hang up.

9

Happy birthday! Come and visit soon. The cookie jar has been full since your last birthday and it is starting to worry us.

Short and funny for the card

1

Happy birthday! Eat cake. Ignore vegetables. Repeat next year.

2

One year bigger, one shelf higher. Congratulations.

3

Happy birthday! Today you are in charge. Enjoy it while it lasts.

4

Wishing you cake, candles and a very late bedtime.

5

Happy birthday! Make a wish, then quickly make three more.

6

Have the best day. Take the biggest piece. You have earned it.

7

Happy birthday! All rules cancelled until further notice.

8

May your candles light up and your homework disappear.

9

Happy birthday! Louder, sillier and messier than last year, please.

10

One more year of being completely, wonderfully you.

11

Happy birthday! We hope today is exactly your kind of day.

12

Cake first. Questions later. Happy birthday!

13

Happy birthday! Save us a slice. Or do not. We understand.

Silly ones to read out loud at the party

1

Attention everyone. We are gathered here today to eat cake in honour of one specific person, and that person is standing right there. Happy birthday!

2

By the authority given to me by absolutely nobody, I declare today a holiday. School stays open, unfortunately, but the cake is real. Happy birthday!

3

Happy birthday! A quick announcement: the birthday girl has requested that this speech be short, so I will be talking for only another forty minutes.

4

Roses are red, the icing is blue, we all made a wish and every one was for you. Also a little bit for cake. Mostly for you. Happy birthday!

5

Warning: this house now contains a person who is one year older and considerably more powerful than she was yesterday. Proceed with cake.

6

Happy birthday! Today’s schedule: cake at some point, chaos immediately, and one adult quietly cleaning something in the background the entire time.

7

We interrupt this perfectly ordinary day to bring you an important bulletin. It is somebody’s birthday. That somebody has icing on her chin already.

8

Everyone please put down your forks. Not you. You keep going. It is your birthday and the rest of us can wait our turn.

9

Happy birthday! In keeping with tradition, we will now sing badly, off key and much too slowly. Please try to look surprised.

Questions and answers

What kind of joke actually works for a child, and what should never go in one?

The joke has to be at the situation’s expense and never at hers. That rules out anything about how she looks, what she eats, how she compares with a brother, a sister or a classmate, and every variation on how much older she is getting, which is an adult worry dressed up as a punchline. What works instead is exaggerating her authority for the day, treating her preferences as law, and casting the grown-ups as the ridiculous ones. A child laughs hardest when she is in on the joke and an adult is the target. If a line would make her look small in front of the room, it is not funny, however funny it sounded in your head.

The card is going to be read out loud in front of her friends. Does that change what you write?

It changes almost everything. A room full of eight-year-olds gives you roughly fifteen seconds before somebody drifts back to the snacks, so length is the first thing to cut. The second is anything private: a nickname only the family uses, a story about something she cried about, an inside reference her friends will make her explain. Written for an audience, a wish works best in the plural, because we hope gives the whole room something to agree with out loud. And write for the friends as much as for her, since at that age being funny in front of them is a gift in itself, while being touching in front of them is not.

How do you write something funny for a ten or twelve-year-old without sounding like you are trying too hard?

Start by deleting the pet names. Sweetheart, princess and our little one are touching for the adult writing them and mortifying for the person receiving them in front of friends. Next, delete any slang you picked up secondhand. She will recognize it instantly and it will land exactly as badly as you fear. What does work at this age is dryness: understatement, a straight face, a joke that credits her with being sharp enough to catch it. Treat her opinions as real opinions and her time as her own. Two good sentences beat eight enthusiastic ones, and the exclamation marks can mostly go.

There are two children in the family and only one birthday. How do you keep the other one from feeling left out?

Keep the card entirely hers and give the other child a job instead of a mention. The instinct is to work the sibling into the wording, along the lines of your brother helped pick this out, which quietly turns her card into a family bulletin. Comparisons are the real hazard, and even flattering ones land on two children at once: calling her the tidy one tells the other exactly what he is. Carrying the cake in, choosing the candles, being allowed to say happy birthday first — those give a sibling a part in the day without taking a line out of her card. Then make his card just as specific when his turn comes. Children audit this and they remember.

Does a funny wish still need an actual wish in it, or is the joke enough?

It needs one, and it belongs at the end. A joke on its own reads as a comment rather than a greeting, and children hear the difference immediately even if they could not name it. The shape that works is two or three silly sentences followed by one short plain one saying what you genuinely hope for her. That plain sentence is the part she keeps, and it does not have to be solemn: hope today is exactly your kind of day will do. Without it, a funny card is a performance aimed at the adults in the room. With it, the humour becomes the wrapping and the wish is the thing inside. If you are stuck, write the wish first and put the joke above it.
