What the Movement’s Members Do

Alberta is one of Canada’s most resource-rich provinces, profiting heavily from fossil fuels, but this profit comes at a steep price. While the province is home to just 11.5% of Canada’s population, it accounts for 38% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. “Climate Justice Edmonton” is also working to halt fossil fuel extraction. At the same time, the movement promotes the idea of a complete transition to renewable energy.
Unfortunately, because the movement confronts the country’s biggest polluters and major corporations, it faces some of the strongest resistance from government, business, and fellow citizens. “Climate Justice Edmonton” advocates for the “polluter pays” principle, demanding accountability for the harm caused to the environment and society.
Engaging Volunteers
“Climate Justice Edmonton” engages volunteers in several ways. For example, they organized a Climate Camp in 2023. It was a three-day gathering for both seasoned activists and newcomers looking to get involved. The event drew over 100 people from across Alberta.
“Climate Justice Edmonton” also makes an effort to involve rural residents in these events. They covered all travel and accommodation costs, provided sign language interpretation, and offered childcare support.
