Coronation Park is the opposite: a large green rectangle in west-central Edmonton that has spent seventy years quietly accumulating some of the most ambitious buildings the city has ever put up. Canada&#8217;s first public planetarium stands here. So does a science centre by one of the country&#8217;s most celebrated architects. So does a modernist swimming pool that won a national architecture medal, and, since January 2026, a major sport complex with an indoor cycling track wrapped around it. Between and around all of that there is still an ordinary neighbourhood park doing ordinary things \u2014 ball diamond, bowling greens, tennis, a shale running track, bookable picnic shelters and a lot of open grass. It is, in effect, a civic campus that never stopped being a park, and the mix is what makes it worth a detour.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium<\/strong> \u2014 Canada&#8217;s first public planetarium, dedicated on 22 September 1960, designated a municipal historic resource in 2017, restored by 2021 and reopened to the public on 29 September 2023 after forty years dark.<\/li>\n<li><strong>TELUS World of Science \u2013 Edmonton<\/strong> \u2014 the curving, wave-roofed science centre that opened on 1 July 1984, designed by Douglas J. Cardinal Architects, one of the defining works of Canada&#8217;s best-known Indigenous architect.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre<\/strong> \u2014 opened to the public on 27 January 2026 after a four-year build, with a 250-metre indoor cycling track seating up to 940 spectators, an indoor running track, courts, a bouldering wall and a fitness centre.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre<\/strong> \u2014 opened in 1970 as Coronation Pool, designed by Peter Hemingway and honoured with a Massey Medal, now rehabilitated and folded into the new complex.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A triathlon first<\/strong> \u2014 with a 50-metre pool, a running track and a cycling track under one roof, the site is billed as North America&#8217;s first indoor triathlon training centre.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Everyday park amenities<\/strong> \u2014 a ball diamond, bowling greens, tennis courts, a sports field with a shale track and three bookable picnic sites, each with canopy shelter, tables and a fire pit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_inside\"><\/span>What&#8217;s inside<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Think of the park as four layers stacked on the same 35 hectares: heritage architecture, contemporary sport, casual recreation and plain open ground. All of it is public, and the outdoor layer costs nothing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The restored planetarium at the centre of the park, with its eight-metre dome, floor-to-ceiling gold-framed glazing and twelve zodiac stone mosaics.<\/li>\n<li>The science centre in the southwest corner, with exhibit galleries, a large-format cinema and its own modern planetarium theatre.<\/li>\n<li>The sport and recreation centre with its velodrome, integrated aquatic centre, training studios, indoor play space and child-minding.<\/li>\n<li>Coronation Arena for ice sport, plus the outdoor ball diamond, bowling greens and tennis courts.<\/li>\n<li>A grass sports field with a shale running track, used year-round by neighbourhood clubs and casual runners.<\/li>\n<li>Three reservable picnic sites, each seating around seventy-five people under a canopy, with wood camp stoves and fire pits; firewood is not supplied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>What to do and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Families with school-age children<\/strong> \u2014 a science centre, a planetarium and a playground within a few minutes&#8217; walk of one another make a full day without moving the car.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Swimmers and triathletes<\/strong> \u2014 the 50-metre pool, running track and velodrome in one building are a genuinely unusual training combination on this continent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cyclists<\/strong> \u2014 the indoor track is aimed at competitive standards and gives Edmonton riders a winter home; spectators get tiered seating rather than a fence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Architecture travellers<\/strong> \u2014 three distinct eras of Canadian design stand within sight of each other: 1960 modern expressionism, 1984 organic curves and a 2026 sport hall.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Groups and reunions<\/strong> \u2014 the bookable picnic shelters with fire pits are among the more practical outdoor party venues in the west end of the city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Casual users<\/strong> \u2014 dog walkers, joggers, lawn bowlers and ball players who simply want flat, quiet, well-kept green space near home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_and_practicalities\"><\/span>Getting there and practicalities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park sits in the Woodcroft neighbourhood of west-central Edmonton, ringed by Dovercourt, Sherbrooke, Inglewood, Westmount, North Glenora and McQueen. Edmonton Transit Service buses serve the area directly, and the Valley Line West LRT now under construction \u2014 completion anticipated in 2028 \u2014 will add Glenora and Grovenor stations a walk to the south. Entry to the park is free and it is open daily from early morning until late evening; the indoor facilities keep their own hours and admission policies. Parking is available nearby, with the neighbouring community league lot one block over, and the same building holds the closest playground. Washroom access outdoors has been patchy during construction years, with portable facilities near the playground and seasonal access through the planetarium, so plan around that if you are bringing small children. Allow two hours for a straightforward outdoor visit, a half day if you add the science centre, and a full day if you intend to swim, train or attend an event. This is Edmonton, so winter is not an afterthought: outdoor use drops sharply from November to March, which is precisely the season the new indoor complex was built for.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring turns the open ground soft and green and brings the bowling greens, ball diamond and shale track back into use; it is also when the park&#8217;s mature trees finally leaf out after a long brown April. Summer is the park&#8217;s loudest season \u2014 picnic shelters booked out most weekends, families streaming between the science centre and the playground, evening light lasting until nearly eleven at this latitude. Autumn is short, gold and windy, and the best few weeks for running the track or walking the perimeter without needing a coat. Winter is when the park inverts: the lawns go under snow, the outdoor amenities close down, and everything moves indoors to the pool, the courts and the cycling track, while the planetarium does what a planetarium does best in a city with sixteen hours of December darkness.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worth_knowing\"><\/span>Worth knowing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The City of Edmonton bought this land in 1906, then left it largely undeveloped for decades; it was known first as West End City Park or Westmount Park, and was renamed in 1953 to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The planetarium came next, built to commemorate the Queen&#8217;s July 1959 visit with Prince Philip: designed by Walter Telfer, Richard Falconer Duke and Denis Mulvaney of the City Architect&#8217;s office in a modern expressionist idiom, it was dedicated on 22 September 1960 by Mayor Elmer Roper and became the first public planetarium in Canada. Its founding director, Ian McLennan, built a reputation for astronomy shows produced with television technique, and the building later gained twelve zodiac stone mosaics by the artists Edith and Heinrich Eichner in 1966. It closed to the general public on 31 December 1983, superseded by the Edmonton Space Sciences Centre that opened in the same park on 1 July 1984 \u2014 a building designed by Douglas J. Cardinal Architects, appointed in January 1979, with construction starting in March 1982. Cardinal, of Blackfoot and M\u00e9tis descent, is among the most influential Indigenous architects in Canada, and the centre&#8217;s flowing curves are a signature of his work; the institution has since been called the Edmonton Space and Science Centre, Odyssium, and today TELUS World of Science. Coronation Pool arrived in 1970 to a design by Peter Hemingway that earned a Massey Medal, and was renamed in his honour in 2005. City council identified the park as the site for a major new sport facility in 2007, approved funding in January 2019, started construction in 2022, and opened the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre on 27 January 2026, delivered by hcma architecture + design and Dub Architects in collaboration with FaulknerBrowns. Edmonton lies within Treaty 6 territory and the homeland of the M\u00e9tis; the river valley and the plains around it have been travelled and lived on by Cree, Blackfoot, Nakota Sioux, Dene and Saulteaux peoples long before any of these buildings existed.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Book picnic shelters ahead for summer weekends \u2014 there are only three, each seats around seventy-five, and they go early. They are different institutions on the same site with different schedules.<\/li>\n<li>In deep winter, treat the indoor complex as the destination and the park as the approach.
