in Spanish, and the name was earned honestly: this is a stretch of wooded river flat on the north bank of the North Saskatchewan, below the Laurier Heights neighbourhood in Edmonton&#8217;s west end, with the valley walls rising on both sides and the water running past the trees. It is best known as dog country. The off-leash ground here runs into the neighbouring Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park and is one of the busiest in the city \u2014 forest single-track, open field and direct river access, so a dog can run, sniff and swim in one visit. But there is more to it than that: a restored modernist house that is now a public venue, kilometres of multi-use trail, and immediate connections to the zoo, the nature centre and William Hawrelak Park downstream.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Buena Vista and Sir Wilfrid Laurier off-leash area<\/strong> \u2014 one of Edmonton&#8217;s largest and most-used dog areas, combining wooded trails, open field and a river bank where dogs swim; the two parks&#8217; off-leash ground reads as a single continuous run.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yorath House<\/strong> \u2014 a modernist family home built in 1949 on the river flats, designated a Municipal Historic Resource in 2015 and reopened on 20 September 2019 after a $5.7-million restoration as a year-round public rental and programme space.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Direct river access<\/strong> \u2014 one of the few places in the city where you can walk from a parking lot to a gravel bank on the North Saskatchewan in under five minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The valley trail network<\/strong> \u2014 paved and gravel multi-use trails run through the park and link it to Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park, William Hawrelak Park and the wider system of more than 160 kilometres of maintained trail.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Neighbouring attractions<\/strong> \u2014 the Edmonton Valley Zoo, which opened on 1 July 1959 as the Storyland Valley Zoo, and the John Janzen Nature Centre are both immediately alongside.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Old-growth flats forest<\/strong> \u2014 balsam poplar, spruce and willow on rich alluvial soil, with a bird list and a mosquito population to match; it feels considerably wilder than its distance from the city centre suggests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park is essentially a long, flat, forested terrace with the river on one side and the valley slope on the other. It is not a designed landscape in the way Borden or Hawrelak are \u2014 there are no flower beds, no bandshell and no pool. What there is, is space, trees, water and trail, plus one very good building.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A large signed off-leash area with both open and forested sections and river bank access.<\/li>\n<li>Walking and cycling trails, paved in parts and gravel elsewhere, running the length of the flats.<\/li>\n<li>Yorath House, bookable for events, retreats, weddings and community programmes throughout the year.<\/li>\n<li>Parking lots with accessible stalls, benches, and public washrooms open roughly 9am to 9pm.<\/li>\n<li>Undeveloped riverbank with gravel bars, driftwood and clear views up and down the valley.<\/li>\n<li>Connections a short walk away to the Edmonton Valley Zoo, the John Janzen Nature Centre and the Sir Wilfrid Laurier and William Hawrelak parks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dog owners<\/strong> \u2014 the main reason people come, and for good reason: forest, field and river in one continuous off-leash run shared with the neighbouring Laurier Park.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trail runners and cyclists<\/strong> \u2014 long, flat, shaded valley-bottom routes with connections in both directions, ideal for building distance without hills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Families combining a park with an attraction<\/strong> \u2014 the zoo and the nature centre are alongside, so a morning of animals can end with an afternoon on the flats.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Event planners and small groups<\/strong> \u2014 Yorath House is one of the few heritage venues in Edmonton where you can hold a wedding or a retreat with the river directly outside.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Birdwatchers and naturalists<\/strong> \u2014 riparian poplar forest and open water bring warblers, waxwings, woodpeckers, beavers and, on the water, mergansers and goldeneyes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Winter walkers, skiers and snowshoers<\/strong> \u2014 the flats stay usable all winter, and the valley trails through here are among the easiest cross-country terrain in the city.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park lies in Edmonton&#8217;s west end on the north bank of the river, below the Laurier Heights neighbourhood and next to Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park. Transit is the weak point: there is no year-round frequent service into the valley here. The seasonal 994 shuttle runs from the West Edmonton Mall Transit Centre to the Valley Zoo area \u2014 weekends and holidays from Victoria Day until late June, then weekdays from Canada Day to Labour Day \u2014 and on-demand transit serves the West Edmonton Mall Transit Centre and the South Campus area. Most visitors drive to the on-site lots, which include accessible stalls, or arrive along the valley trail network by bike or on foot from Hawrelak Park and points east. Entry to the park, the trails and the off-leash area is free; the neighbouring Edmonton Valley Zoo and John Janzen Nature Centre charge separate admission, and Yorath House is a paid rental facility. The park is open daily from 5am to 11pm, with washrooms roughly 9am to 9pm. Allow an hour for a straightforward dog walk, two to three hours to walk the flats and the river bank properly, and a full day if you are adding the zoo.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is dramatic here because the river does the work: ice break-up, high brown meltwater, and a forest floor that greens in a matter of days once the ground thaws. It is also the muddiest period on the flats. Summer brings deep shade under the poplars \u2014 a genuine advantage when the open prairie parks are baking \u2014 long evenings, dogs in the river, and mosquitoes that are a real factor near standing water at dusk. Autumn is the standout season: balsam poplar and aspen turn gold in late September, the mosquitoes disappear, the light comes in low along the river, and the trails empty. Winter is severe and long in Edmonton \u2014 extended stretches below \u221220\u00b0C, colder in a snap, and only about seven and a half hours of daylight at solstice \u2014 and it turns the flats into some of the most pleasant easy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing terrain in the city, flat, sheltered from wind by the valley walls and quiet. The off-leash area stays busy in every one of those conditions; Edmontonians simply add layers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Three corrections to the way this park is usually described are worth making up front. First, there is no swimming pool in Buena Vista Park. The City of Edmonton operates five outdoor pools \u2014 the Borden Natural Swimming Pool, Fred Broadstock, Mill Creek, Queen Elizabeth and W\u00eehkw\u00eant\u00f4win, formerly Oliver \u2014 and none of them is here. The swimming that happens in Buena Vista is dogs in the North Saskatchewan, and the river is cold, silty and fast-moving; it is not a supervised place for people to swim. Second, the Alfred H. Savage Centre is not in this park either. It stands in Whitemud Park, on the other side of the valley near the mouth of Whitemud Creek, reached by the trail network; it is a LEED Silver building with geothermal heating, offering community rentals, outdoor education programming, warming facilities and the 1,300-square-foot Aspen Room for up to 110 people. It is named for Alfred H. Savage, Edmonton&#8217;s Commissioner of Public Affairs from 1974 to 1981, who championed both the Muttart Conservatory and the John Janzen Nature Centre. Third, on the off-leash claim: this is certainly among Edmonton&#8217;s best-known and busiest off-leash areas, and it feels enormous because it runs continuously into Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park \u2014 but by pure area, Three Mile Bend, at about 55 hectares, and Terwillegar Park are larger. The park&#8217;s own history sits in Yorath House. Dennis Kestell Yorath built the two-storey modernist home in 1949 on a twelve-acre plot given to him by his father-in-law; his father, Christopher J. Yorath (1879\u20131932), had come to Edmonton as city commissioner in 1921. The Yorath family lived there until 1992, when the City bought the 4.5-hectare property to consolidate public ownership of the river frontage. The house then sat empty for years, was designated a Municipal Historic Resource in 2015, and reopened on 20 September 2019 after a $5.7-million restoration and expansion. It is believed to be one of the very few surviving houses on Edmonton&#8217;s river flats. Immediately downstream is William Hawrelak Park, which connects this stretch of valley to the city&#8217;s Ukrainian history: William Hawrelak, Edmonton&#8217;s longest-serving mayor and one of the most prominent Ukrainian-Canadians in the city&#8217;s public life, proposed the park in 1954; construction began in 1959, it opened on 1 July 1967 as Mayfair Park and was renamed in his honour in 1982. After roughly three years of closure for rehabilitation, it held its grand reopening on 30 May 2026. That connection is not a curiosity \u2014 Edmonton has the largest urban Ukrainian community in Canada, 144,620 residents of Ukrainian origin and 14.1 percent of the population at the 2006 census, rooted in settlement that began north-east of the city after 1892. Next door, the Edmonton Valley Zoo opened on 1 July 1959 as the Storyland Valley Zoo, replacing the city&#8217;s original zoo in Borden Park.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring a towel and expect a wet dog. River access is the point of this park, and the bank is gravel and silt rather than sand.<\/li>\n<li>Use insect repellent from late June through August, especially in the hour before sunset near standing water \u2014 the flats forest is prime mosquito habitat.<\/li>\n<li>Check river conditions in spring.
