Roughly 12.9 hectares of promenade, lawn, garden and plaza run along the north bank with about half a kilometre of unobstructed river view \u2014 no trees in the way, no road between you and the water. A funicular drops you down the bank, a Chinese garden hides behind its walls, a covered stage waits for the next wedding party, and the Tawatin\u00e2 Bridge carries walkers and trains across to the other side. It is a park built as a doorway: step through it and the entire valley trail system opens up.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The 100 Street Funicular<\/strong> \u2014 a glass-walled cabin that carries twenty people down 55 metres of riverbank in 48 seconds, free to ride, opened in December 2017 and designed by DIALOG as part of the city&#8217;s Mechanized River Valley Access project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Frederick G. Todd Overlook<\/strong> \u2014 a lookout on the promenade above the park, named for the landscape architect whose 1907 report urged Edmonton to keep its river valley as a connected &#8220;necklace of parks&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Edmonton Chinese Garden<\/strong> \u2014 about 1.25 acres set between the Oval Lawn and the Rose Garden, with a hexagonal ting pavilion, a nine-dragon wall, a stone bridge, a rock pond, winding paths and a monument to Chinese pioneers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Shumka Stage<\/strong> \u2014 a covered performance venue named for the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers in recognition of their contribution to the city, bookable for concerts, ceremonies and weddings, with a heated green room and kitchenette behind it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Riverfront Plaza and Promenade<\/strong> \u2014 the paved spine of the park, with washrooms, benches and the widest river view in the central city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Tawatin\u00e2 Bridge<\/strong> \u2014 the Valley Line crossing that also carries people on foot and on bicycles over to Henrietta Muir Edwards Park on the far bank.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The layout is a long ribbon rather than a block: everything is strung along the bank, so you can walk the whole park end to end without ever losing sight of the water.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paved walking and cycling trails that plug directly into the Trans Canada Trail network and the wider valley system.<\/li>\n<li>A public dock on the river for canoes, kayaks and small craft.<\/li>\n<li>The Trans Canada Trail Pavilion, marking the park&#8217;s place on the national route.<\/li>\n<li>Washrooms in the Riverfront Plaza building, plus a small caf\u00e9 in season.<\/li>\n<li>Seasonal bike and Segway rentals for people who want to cover more of the valley than their legs allow.<\/li>\n<li>Open lawns and benches used equally by office workers at lunch, wedding photographers and people who simply came to watch the river.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Downtown workers<\/strong> \u2014 the fastest escape from the towers into real river air; the funicular makes it a lunch-hour trip rather than an expedition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visitors with one afternoon<\/strong> \u2014 the park sits within a short walk of the Edmonton Convention Centre, the Royal Alberta Museum, Sir Winston Churchill Square and, across the water, the Muttart Conservatory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cyclists and runners<\/strong> \u2014 a paved gateway onto dozens of kilometres of connected valley trail in both directions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paddlers<\/strong> \u2014 the public dock is one of the few easy launches this close to the city centre.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Couples and event planners<\/strong> \u2014 the Shumka Stage and the Chinese Garden gazebo are among the most-booked ceremony spots in Edmonton.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People with limited mobility<\/strong> \u2014 the funicular, the elevator to the valley floor and the paved promenade were built specifically so the river valley would not be reserved for the able-bodied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park lies directly below downtown, immediately south of the Edmonton Convention Centre and east of the Hotel Macdonald bluff, in the neighbourhood the city calls the Quarters. Coming from downtown, the simplest route is the funicular, whose upper station sits at the top of the bank near the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald and which links to a 200-metre promenade, the Frederick G. Todd Overlook and an elevator down to the valley floor. Valley Line LRT trains cross the river beside the park on the Tawatin\u00e2 Bridge, and the Capital and Metro Line platforms at Churchill Station are a short walk uphill; ETS buses serve the downtown core above. Entry to the park is free, and the funicular is free as well, running from 7 am to 9 pm. The park itself is open from 5 am to 11 pm, with washrooms available from 9 am to 9 pm. An hour covers the promenade and the Chinese Garden; give it half a day if you plan to walk or ride the valley trails.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring brings the river back to life \u2014 high, brown and fast with mountain melt \u2014 and the promenade fills as soon as the pavement dries. Summer is the park&#8217;s peak: festival season downtown spills into it, the Shumka Stage hosts performances and ceremonies, the Chinese Garden is at its greenest and the lawns stay busy until the long northern dusk finally gives out. Autumn is the quietest good season, with gold on the far bank, cool clear light on the water and enough space to have the overlook to yourself. Winter genuinely works here in a way it does not in a wooded ravine park: the promenade is cleared, the funicular keeps running through the cold, the frozen river turns white and silent below, and the downtown skyline lit against a four o&#8217;clock sunset is one of the best views the city offers. Wind on the open bank is the only thing to plan for.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park is named for Louise Crummy McKinney (1868-1931), a temperance and women&#8217;s rights campaigner elected to the Alberta legislature in 1917 for the constituency of Claresholm \u2014 the first woman elected and sworn into any legislature in the British Empire. She was later one of the Famous Five whose petition led to the 1929 Persons Case ruling that women were &#8220;qualified persons&#8221; eligible for appointment to the Senate of Canada. Several nearby valley parks carry the names of her fellow petitioners, among them Henrietta Muir Edwards Park directly across the river. The land itself has a longer story: through the middle of the twentieth century, members of Edmonton&#8217;s Chinese community grew vegetables on these fertile riverside flats, a practice that faded by the 1960s as the city pressed in. That history is the reason the Edmonton Chinese Garden stands where it does. The community had been pursuing the idea since 1980; the Edmonton Chinese Garden Society formed in August 2000, registered as a charity that September and incorporated in Alberta in November of the same year. ISL led the master plan, and specialist designers from Harbin, Hong Kong and Macau worked with local architect Francis Ng on the pavilions, walls and stonework. The park as a whole took its present form during the 2000s under the city&#8217;s Ribbons of Green river valley programme. The funicular that now serves it was completed in December 2017 at a project cost of about $24 million shared between the city, the province, the federal government and the River Valley Alliance; it received an International Architecture Award in 2019 and a National Urban Design Award for civic design from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2020.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Ride the funicular down and walk back up the bank if you can \u2014 the climb gives you the river view the whole way, and the overlook is worth the pause.<\/li>\n<li>The Chinese Garden rewards slow walking; its details are in the stone carvings and the dragon wall, not in the overall footprint.<\/li>\n<li>The open promenade catches wind straight off the river, so bring a layer more than the downtown temperature suggests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Questions_answers\"><\/span>Questions &amp; answers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Is the park free?<\/strong> Yes, and so is the funicular.
