It is one of the oldest and most heavily used pieces of the city&#8217;s river valley: golf and cricket in summer, a 400-metre speed skating oval and about two kilometres of lit skating trail in winter, and a broad flat of grass, cottonwood and paved path that carries a constant traffic of runners, cyclists and dog walkers all year. There is no direct bus service into the park itself: the nearest LRT is Government Centre Station, served by both the Capital Line and the Metro Line, from which it is a walk down the bank into the valley \u2014 steep but short. Most people arrive on foot or by bicycle along the valley trails, or drive to the on-site lots, which include accessible stalls; bike racks are provided. Entry to the park, the trails, the IceWay and the public skating oval is free. The golf course and its driving range are a separate paid facility, as are skating lessons and club programmes. The park is open daily from 5am to 11pm; pavilion washrooms typically run 9am to 10pm. The public oval generally runs Monday to Thursday from 10am to 5pm and again 7pm to 10pm, and Friday to Sunday 10am to 10pm, with the speed skating club holding exclusive weekday evening slots \u2014 check before you go if you are counting on the oval. Allow an hour for a walk, two or three for skating, half a day for golf.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Winter is the reason to prioritise this park, and Edmonton&#8217;s winter is not decorative \u2014 it is long, dry and genuinely cold, with weeks below \u221220\u00b0C and cold snaps well beyond that. That climate is exactly what makes an outdoor 400-metre oval and two kilometres of trail ice viable for months rather than days. Skating here under lights at \u221215\u00b0C with ice fog on the river is one of the defining Edmonton experiences, and the groomed ski trail runs alongside it. Spring is brief and muddy: melt, high brown water, the first cyclists, the golf course opening as soon as the ground allows. Summer is long-evening country \u2014 daylight past ten o&#8217;clock in June, cricket on the pitch, the flat trails busy until dark, and the valley noticeably cooler than the streets on the bank above. Autumn is the connoisseur&#8217;s season: the cottonwoods and aspens go gold in late September, the trails empty out, and the low sun rakes across the river with the skyline behind it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The brief history most often repeated about this park needs correcting on one point. Victoria Park did not open in 1893: the land was part of the Hudson&#8217;s Bay Company Reserve, known as the Hudson&#8217;s Bay Flats, and the City acquired it in 1911\u20131912 as part of a broader river valley purchase. The park was officially opened on 25 May 1914 and named for Queen Victoria. In its first years it held a rifle range, horse stables, picnic grounds and Edmonton&#8217;s first cricket pitch. What is true \u2014 and more interesting than the wrong date \u2014 is the golf chronology. Golf came to this ground in 1896, when the Edmonton Country Club laid out a rudimentary course for its members on Hudson&#8217;s Bay land. After Hardisty House burned in 1906, the links were shifted slightly west in 1907 and rebuilt as a nine-hole course known as The Golf Links; the private club ran it until 1912. When the City opened Victoria Park in May 1914, it opened the nine-hole Municipal Golf Links with it \u2014 the first municipal golf course in Canada. So the 1907 date in circulation belongs to the private nine-hole layout; the municipal course dates from 1914. It reached eighteen holes by 1927 and twenty-seven by 1950, and plays as eighteen holes with a driving range today. The park exists at all because of Frederick G. Todd, the Montreal-based landscape architect generally credited as Canada&#8217;s first resident practitioner to use the title. The City commissioned him over the winter of 1906\u201307 to report on its future park needs, and his 1907 recommendations were to keep the river valley and its ravines as open space and to run a scenic drive along the top of the bank. Acting on that advice, Edmonton acquired more than a hundred river valley properties between 1907 and 1931, and in 1915 the provincial government adopted a Todd report protecting the valley and ravines for recreation. The result is the North Saskatchewan River valley parks system, the &#8220;Ribbon of Green&#8221; \u2014 over 7,300 hectares, more than thirty parks, some 88 kilometres of connected valley and more than 160 kilometres of maintained trail, described as the largest contiguous area of urban parkland in the country. Victoria Park is one of its keystones. On the winter facilities: the oval is a full 400-metre Olympic-size track, the pavilion opened in 2015 and is operated with the Edmonton Speed Skating Association, and the IceWay is about two kilometres in three linked loops. It is a large outdoor skating trail by any standard, but not the country&#8217;s longest \u2014 that title belongs to Ottawa&#8217;s Rideau Canal Skateway, which is an entirely different scale at 7.8 kilometres. What Victoria Park has instead is proximity: two kilometres of lit trail ice and an Olympic oval, ten minutes below a working downtown.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Check the oval schedule before making the trip in winter. The speed skating club has exclusive use on weekday evenings, and the ice condition line is updated when weather closes surfaces.<\/li>\n<li>Dress in layers with a windproof outer shell and cover your face. Skating generates wind chill on top of the ambient temperature, and \u221220\u00b0C on the oval feels very different from \u221220\u00b0C standing still.<\/li>\n<li>Walk down from downtown rather than driving in, if you can. The IceWay suits mixed-ability skaters far better than an oval does, there is a playground and reservable picnic sites, and the flat trails work for strollers and small bicycles.
