Landfill operations stopped in 1972, the ground was recontoured, and what emerged is now one of the busiest year-round recreation parks in northeast Edmonton: a par-3 golf course, an aquatic centre, a disc golf course with more than four decades of history, paddle boats in summer and a lit IceWay skating trail once the temperature drops.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The ponds and the fountain<\/strong> \u2014 a chain of man-made lakes at the heart of the park, one with a large jet fountain, used for paddle boat rentals in summer and framed by paved paths on every side.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rundle Park Golf Course<\/strong> \u2014 an 18-hole par-3 layout created in 1972 on the recontoured landfill, the first piece of the park to open.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The disc golf course<\/strong> \u2014 originally designed in 1980 and comprehensively redesigned in 2009, one of Edmonton&#8217;s oldest established courses of its kind.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ACT Aquatic and Recreation Centre<\/strong> \u2014 an indoor facility on site with a gradual-depth pool, a whirlpool and a gymnasium, which makes the park usable on the worst weather days.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The footbridge to Gold Bar Park<\/strong> \u2014 a pedestrian crossing of the North Saskatchewan linking Rundle directly into the trail network on the far bank.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The winter IceWay<\/strong> \u2014 a maintained skating and gliding trail through the park, backed by toboggan hills and a warming station inside the Rundle Family Centre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Rundle is a genuine sports park rather than a scenic one \u2014 the emphasis is on things to do, spread across a valley bottom of lawns, ponds and wooded slopes. The closest transit hub is Abbottsfield Transit Centre, a short connection from the park, and Edmonton Transit Service&#8217;s On Demand service also covers the area; there is no LRT station immediately adjacent, so most transit trips involve a bus connection from the Capital Line. There is no admission charge for the park, its trails, playground or picnic areas \u2014 the golf course, aquatic centre and boat rentals operate on their own schedules. The park is open daily from 5am to 11pm, while the Rundle Family Centre runs from 9am to 10pm and the aquatic centre keeps its own facility hours. Two hours covers a walk and the ponds; a family day using the pool, playground and picnic sites easily fills five or six.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Summer is peak season: the par-3 course and disc golf course are in full use, paddle boats are on the ponds, and the reservable picnic sites with their canopies are the natural base for a family gathering that runs from lunch into a long northern evening. Autumn turns the poplar slopes gold through late September and October and is the best time for a quiet run or ride on the paved loops, with the ball diamonds and fields emptying out. Winter is a season Rundle is deliberately built for \u2014 Edmonton&#8217;s January days stay well below freezing and cold snaps past \u221230 \u00b0C are a normal part of the calendar, so the park answers with a maintained IceWay skating trail, toboggan hills, snowshoe-friendly trails and a warming station indoors when fingers stop working. Spring is the transitional stretch: the river breaks up, the unpaved ground turns soft, and migratory birds move back through a valley that supports roughly 150 bird species.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park&#8217;s name honours the Reverend Robert Terrill Rundle, born at Mylor in Cornwall, England, on 11 June 1811 and died at Garstang, England, on 4 February 1896. Sent as a Methodist missionary to the Saskatchewan country in 1840, he reached Fort Edmonton on 17 October 1840 and was the first missionary of any faith to serve the prairie region between the Pacific Ocean and Norway House in what is now Manitoba. He taught hymns, performed baptisms and marriages, and in 1847 selected a site for a permanent mission house; an injury sent him back to England in 1848, but the mission he founded was maintained by Indigenous leaders and later missionaries until 1906. The land beneath the park has a very different story. It was used for farming and strip mining, and coal and gravel were extracted here; from 1966 it served as the Town of Beverly&#8217;s garbage dump. Beverly had amalgamated with Edmonton in 1961. Landfill operations ended in 1972, the site was contoured, and the Rundle Park Golf Course was created that same year. The remainder of the park was folded into the Capital City Recreation Park \u2014 the ambitious river valley scheme formally established in 1974 \u2014 and opened in 1978. So far I&#039;ve only been here in the winter. They try very hard to keep the popular walking paths clear and they gravel the ice. There is lots to do in the park, such as disc golf, paddle boats, soccer or baseball, as well as picnicking. I have ran hundreds of kilometers over the years in the park and there is so many combinations of trails you could do you will never run out.
