This makes it an ideal location for developing solar energy projects. With over 2,000 MW of installed renewable energy capacity as of 2024 and consistent year-over-year growth, the region has a proven track record of success. Abundant natural resources, more than 330 sunny days per year, and a favourable regulatory framework make Edmonton an attractive destination for developing and implementing renewable energy projects. A prime example is the solar power plant at the airport. Alpin Sun, a global renewable energy project developer, has invested approximately $169 million in constructing this 627-acre, 120-megawatt solar power plant on the west side of YEG lands. This 120 MW facility is projected to generate 200,000 MWh annually.
The E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is vital for Edmonton and its surrounding areas. Built over 40 years ago, it supplies water to Edmonton and over 90 nearby communities. Most of the water needed to serve the population comes from the E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant (WTP). This facility is the second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions due to the electricity used for pumping water.
The kīsikāw pīsim solar power plant is addressing these emissions. Commissioned in the fall of 2022, the water treatment plant has access to three power sources:

Solar: From approximately 31,000 panels, which will produce over 20,000 MWh of clean energy annually.

Battery Energy: An on-site storage unit charges during the day and is then utilized when most needed.

Grid Connection: A bidirectional resource that allows for sharing additional renewable energy generation with other facilities.

This project is designed as an intelligent “behind-the-meter” grid. This means the renewable energy source is located directly beside the water treatment plant rather than on the main grid. This setup allows the station to directly access green energy for its needs while reducing its reliance on grid energy. It’s considered intelligent because the water treatment plant, solar panels, and battery all work together as one cohesive system.

A Unique Hydrogen Energy Complex

A zero-emission hydrogen energy complex is poised to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Alberta. It will establish Edmonton as the hub of Western Canada’s hydrogen economy. Canada is well-positioned to become a global leader in hydrogen energy, with this initiative expected to create 1,000 jobs and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The groundbreaking Air Products hydrogen plant utilizes advanced technologies for hydrogen production, including carbon capture and storage systems, which help reduce emissions. The hydrogen produced is used in various industries, including oil refining and chemical manufacturing. Air Products is also actively developing “green” hydrogen production, derived from renewable energy sources.
Significantly, this new energy complex opens doors for expansion and is expected to attract billions in additional private investment to the region. Furthermore, it positions Alberta as a leading supplier of liquid hydrogen to Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

Extensive Park System and Recreational Opportunities

While Edmonton may not boast the mountainous landscapes and shimmering lakes of British Columbia, it offers something equally spectacular: the North Saskatchewan River Valley.
