Instead, natural methods like manure fertilization are used, avoiding synthetic growth enhancers. These products not only benefit human health but also help the environment by promoting natural growth conditions. Organic foods are among the safest and healthiest options for consumption. They support the immune system, supply the body with essential vitamins and minerals, and reduce risks of digestive issues and allergies.

The Farm’s Origins

Lund’s Organic Farm is a family-owned venture based in Alberta. Its founders emphasize that organic food isn’t just flavorful and nutritious—it’s also a crucial part of a sustainable food cycle that benefits both people and the planet. The farm produces a variety of vegetables using safe and sustainable farming methods. This unique certified organic farm is located just 1.5 km west of Innisfail.

The farm’s history began with the owner’s grandfather, who managed a large vegetable farm on the current site. Upon his passing, the land was inherited by his grandson, who dreamed of starting an organic farm from a young age. In 1988, the dream became a reality when the farm officially received its organic certification. Before that, vegetables were grown solely for family needs. Today, the farm grows a wide range of vegetables, including carrots, spinach, lettuce, and potatoes—crops that thrive in Alberta’s cool and often shaded climate. Given central Alberta’s short and chilly summers, warm-weather crops like tomatoes and cucumbers are not cultivated.

The farmland itself features gentle rolling hills with natural protective vegetation strips and waterways. The soil is rich and fertile, with a depth of 12 to 24 inches, making it ideal for agriculture. Historically, this land was used as pasture.

Sustainable Farming Practices

To maintain soil fertility, the farm employs crop rotation techniques, alternating between grains and vegetables. After growing grain crops for three years and tilling the land, vegetables are planted. In addition to vegetables, the farm produces grains such as legumes, chia seeds, black beans, brown rice, white rice, couscous, lentils, and chili peppers.

A Wildlife Haven

The farm also serves as a wildlife sanctuary, offering a safe habitat for local birds and mammals. These animals help naturally control pests and insects, maintaining a balanced ecosystem. All water channels on the property are protected, as are the nesting grounds of native bird species.

The owners adhere to strict sanitation and safety protocols. Annual inspections ensure the farm meets regulatory standards. This rigorous attention to detail enables the farm to produce certified organic goods free of chemical additives, which are then distributed to markets across Alberta.

Community Engagement and Charitable Efforts

The farm collaborates with well-known organizations dedicated to improving global living conditions and nutrition. Remarkably, half of the farm’s profits from vegetable sales are donated to charity, reflecting its commitment to social responsibility and sustainability.
